Lead’s View: no ordinary year at the Masters

Well, the most unusual Masters in history is over. The deserved winner Dustin J gave us a master class, and despite the fact at the end of the second round it looked like there could be any number of potential winners, the last 36 holes DJ was in complete control. With 24 birdies for the week and remarkably only 4 bogies, the back nine on Sunday had none of the traditional excitement and certainly no roars from the patrons – it was a stroll in the park for DJ.
All parts of his game were firing – his power fade off the tee, his precise iron play, great short game when needed, and excellent putting all brought about his 2nd major win. In all probability the fact that DJ is now at the peak of his powers, and has now shaken off his supposed mental frailty relative to his talent level, the floodgates could really now open. He is a supreme athlete who appears very calm and does not let anything bother him. He has somewhat of a unique swing which repeats amazingly well under pressure, and with his brother on the bag, DJ just seems very comfortable in his own skin. His contemporaries, of which there are a number vying for the world number one ranking spot are surely going to have to up their games now that DJ has the bit between his teeth which will make for some exciting competitive golf in the years to come.
Congratulations also go to the 2 runners, Sungjae Im and Cameron Smith, two young players with great futures whose 15-under par totals would have ordinarily won the green jacket in most years – this though was no ordinary year.
