Different Types Of Golf Shafts: Swing Speed, Shaft Flex, Material | Our Ultimate Guide

Different types of golf shafts and golf shaft flexes can significantly improve your game.

Golf shafts might seem like a simple component of a golf club (and in theory, they are), but they play one of the most crucial roles in determining the outcome of your shots. From the material to the flex, each individual aspect of the golf club shaft has a profound impact on your game. We fully understand why it’s important to choose the right golf shaft for your individual game. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll breakdown the different types of golf shafts, explore golf shaft flexes, discuss their importance, and help you identify which shaft best suits your swing speed, allowing you to reach your fullest potential on the golf course. Why Golf Club Shafts Matter

Think of the golf club shaft as the engine of your club – what exactly do we mean by this? In simple terms, the ultimate job of the club shaft is to transfer the energy that you produce from your swing to the golf ball. A well-fitted shaft can (and should) optimize your launch angle, spin rate, and overall performance on the course. On the contrary, an ill-fitted club shaft can cause poor launch angle, spin rate, and overall performance.

Understanding Different Types of Golf Shaft Materials

Steel Shafts: Steel shafts are commonly known for their durability and consistency, but can only be used with irons. Steel golf club shafts are typically less flexible than their counterparts and tend to be less expensive than other golf shaft materials such as graphite, composite, etc.

Graphite shafts: Graphite club shafts are lighter and more flexible when compared to steel shafts. They absorb vibrations better, which can help golfers with joint issues or those seeking more distance. Graphite golf club shafts are commonly used in drivers and fairway woods.

Composite shafts: Composite club shafts are the best of both worlds; they combine elements of both steel and graphite. They aim to provide strength, flexibility, and vibration dampening. Composite golf shafts are often used in “premium” golf clubs.

Golf Shaft Flex: What Is Right For Me?

What shaft flex do I need? This is a question we hear almost every day from golfers visiting our academy(s). Swing speed and shaft flex can a bit complicated, so we’re going to put into the simplest terms we know how:

Extra Stiff (X): Extra stiff flex shafts are designed for golfers with very high swing speeds, and are less flexible than the average club shafts as the name suggests – golfers who play extra stiff shafts typically have swing speeds faster than 110 mph. For the vast majority of us, we’d be lucky to reach swing speed numbers that high.

Stiff (S): Stiff flex shafts are for golfers with fast swing speeds, usually between 95-110 mph. Stiff flex shafts are designed to offer a balance of control and distance, ideal for many advanced players.

Regular (R): The most common flex shaft, is meant for a wide spectrum of golfers with moderate swing speeds (85-95 mph). Regular golf flex shafts strive to provide a good balance of distance and forgiveness.

Senior (A) or Light (L): Flex shafts are designed for golfers with slower swing speeds (less than 85 mph). These shafts are more flexible, helping to generate more clubhead speed and distance for those who need it.

With all of this information, it’s essential to remember that individual factors like tempo, transition, and general swing mechanics will always be the most significant factor in your game. To make sure you’re getting the most out of your equipment, book a lesson with us here.
